Abstract
"The author started visiting, living and teaching in Japan in 1926, and at various intervals through 1937. My closest Japanese friend of those years was a major who on long hiking and fishing trips gave me a wealth of information on Army life and the psychology of the Japanese soldier, and he infrequently chatted with Japanese War Department officials. Clearly, the author has much to offer about understanding a Japanese soldier's fighting spirit -- his hesitation to die for his Emperor-God. The author discusses how Japanese drafted its soldiers prior to the war, and there was a surprising high rejection of potential soldiers because so many of them were malnourished -- and no totally bald man could be drafted," (Amazon.com, 2017).
