Description
A portrait of former Morningside College professor who taught chemistry at the college from 1904-1906, Winford Lee Lewis. He gained international fame for creating a lethal gas named "Lewisite," the gas was believed to be so powerful that it was expected to have a lethal impact during World War I. Production began for the "lewisite" gas but before it could be used against American counterparts, an armistice was signed in 1918, officially ending the war. The portrait was printed in the 1906 Morningside College yearbook, "Whoops of the Sioux."
